I’m captivated by these unique wall coverings from Barry Roode, a talented textile designer based in Mushaboom, Nova Scotia. He’s the creative director of Mushaboom Design, a company that specializes in custom, eco-friendly wall coverings (they make them right here in Atlantic Canada using UV curable inks).

Barry’s hikes through Taylor Head Provincial Park were the inspiration for many of these bold, provocative designs that showcase natural textures—flowers, trees, leaves and crashing waves. I’ll be featuring more about Barry’s wall coverings in our new fall issue that hits stands on September 12. Look for the special décor story on wallpaper written by Linz Caryl Tan.

It’s rare I see black cutlery but this flatware from Almoco is really swanky. Crafted from stainless steel, its slim, sleek design and matte finish would match almost any dinnerware. One website I visited describes it as “goth flatware,” perfect for nihilists and fans of black metal (the music and the material). Click here to see more. (Thanks Lisa K.)

This product made me laugh out loud at first. But after reflecting on how many times I’ve locked myself out of my apartment, I think it’s an ingenious idea. It’s essentially a rock that’s also a safety deposit box for your keys. The makers of RocLok say you can place the rock outside in landscaping or even in a stream. It comes in various shapes and sizes and is made of heavy cement, so it feels and looks like an actual rock. Hmmm, the only draw back I see with it is that you still have to remember where you’ve put the rock and remember its combination. For more information, visit the RocLok website.

Have a peek at this pendant light. I love all the raw, exposed light bulbs with the mirrored glass tips. It’s the Ten Tales multi-pendant light from Attica Furnishings. Halifax interior designer Jonathan Legate featured it in his design seminar at Attica a few weeks ago. It will be appearing in our upcoming fall magazine, in a special décor spread on accessories that have mirror surfaces. I’m currently in the final stages of proofing the fall magazine, which will be hitting newsstands on September 12.

The other day on Twitter, I stumbled across an interesting project by New Brunswick artist Matt LeBlanc; he specializes in beautiful abstract paintings—I love how he uses texture and rich colours in his work. Over the course of six months, he’s been creating 200 abstract paintings and selling them online in support of the Tree of Hope Campaign, which helps people living with cancer.

Matt aims to sell all 200 artworks, raising at least $25,000 in time for the Art for Life gala on September 24 at the new art and culture centre in Dieppe. He’ll be unveiling all of his artwork at the gala. Matt’s already sold 118 pieces raising $15,000 for the cause. To learn more about Matt’s campaign and to check out some of his artwork (I've pasted some samples below), visit his website here.
